Halloween masquerade

horrormaskThere is something about the human psyche that encourages us to see human faces in patterns – it’s given as an explanation for several ‘ghost photographs’. Conversely, the inability to see someone’s face can unnerve and confuse us. Just think of the number of horror movies which escalate tension by keeping their villain’s face hidden! This is why a masquerade party is the perfect accent to your Halloween celebrations.

Masks have been a part of Halloween for a long time and are best-sellers in most party shops throughout the year. Monsters, certain movie serial killers and werewolves are all popular choices for full face options. Cats and witches tend to be more successful as half-face masks.

If you want something a little bit different for your party look to Venice, home of the Carnival, for inspiration. The Venetian event takes place in February or March each year and sees the streets and canals of this Italian city crammed with masked partygoers. The traditional Venetian mask is known as a Bauta. It is full-face and creates a beautifully decorated, but emotionally blank, façade. The impassive expression is emphasised by a lack of mouth, creating an almost inhuman effect that makes them perfect for a Halloween party.

Alternatively have an interactive masked party by asking guests to make their own. All you need to provide are some card, coloured pens and a variety of decorative extras, then let your visitors create their own new face.

If you’re looking for an enigmatic spin on your Halloween party, consider making masks obligatory.
